As the global energy transition accelerates, Vietnam is also speeding up efforts to expand renewable energy and strengthen energy security. But can increasing energy production alone resolve the country’s power challenges? Due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy, a solution for stabilizing the grid is essential.
In this context, Energy Storage Systems (ESS) are emerging as a core solution. ESS offers strategic value by managing peak demand, stabilizing the grid, and enabling electricity trading and carbon reduction. As such, ESS is expected to play a central role in Vietnam’s energy transition.
However, for the ESS industry to fully take off, not only technological advancements but also policy support and clear regulatory frameworks must be established. In response, the Vietnamese government amended the Electricity Law in 2024 to specifically promote the development of renewable and new energy sources, while expanding incentives and R&D support for appropriate technologies in solar and wind energy. These changes are expected to mark a major turning point in Vietnam’s energy market.
In this issue, we examine the growth potential and driving forces behind Vietnam’s ESS market, explore the technological and policy-related challenges it faces, and consider how a sustainable energy ecosystem can be built around ESS.
1. Creating Energy Value Through ESS
(1) The Current State and Growth Drivers of Vietnam's ESS Market
Currently, demand for ESS in Vietnam is concentrated around industrial zones, but it is gradually expanding to commercial and public sectors. Enterprises are especially drawn to ESS for its benefits in managing peak loads, reducing blackout risks, and cutting energy costs.
In line with this trend, the government is improving the ESS investment environment through initiatives such as the Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA) and the 2024 Electricity Law revision.
Looking ahead, legal and institutional frameworks will allow businesses equipped with ESS to sell surplus electricity in the power market or convert reduced carbon emissions into carbon credits for profit. These developments will shift the role of ESS from a simple storage tool to a core asset in energy monetization, and the ESS market in Vietnam is expected to grow steadily.
